Freedom: A Dilemma
– Rabiya Shahab
We live in a world that moves by the speed of a lightning bolt traveling amidst clouds, there is no stopping, no looking back. A society that lives in such a way establishes certain standards.
These standards embark their uniqueness and their success. One of the biggest standard is freedom.
Freedom? Does it ring a bell? I’m sure it does. It’s the same word we have been hearing since we came into existence. How we all live in a free country to exercise freedom of all kinds. How we choose what we want to do, what we want to eat and how we live, but is this freedom really that limitless?
I say NO, This freedom is just like a bribe. The bribe that mother gives to her daughter in the disguise of a candy bar to stay away from the next door neighbors. The bribe that a master gives to his dog in the guise of a treat to keep him confided. If you all get my point then it’s good, but for those who don’t I mean that we are spoon-fed about this word….This terminology that we find it too good to be true and it completely blinds us from the bitter reality. These bribes are actually silly little things that we attend to and forget the main things that really matters! Our True Self! Hidden underneath all that years of brain washing screaming and begging to come out! It need to see the light and to be a part of the world. This is the reality of our society. How it controls us but still preach the message of freedom.
For every individual, psychological growth is of dire importance. It is what connects with our physical body and BOOM! The magic happens. The magic which is depicted in the works of Shakespeare, the amazing models and painting of Da Vinci, the philosophy of Socrates and so on. But if we go back in the time of most of the remarkable jewels of our past we will come to know how they were ridiculed! Yes! They were ridiculed because they were different, because to them life was not just birth-marriage-death, it was a limitless journey of a soul which travels and it’s full of magnificent components.
From what I have learned through psychology, every individual in this world is unique within himself. Everyone has a different personality, a unique set of traits. But what happens if these traits are inconsistent with the society? Well they are then eradicated by tricking the individuals. Parents sometimes forget that their child can think for themselves too, a little help is good and supportive but too much results in interference.
A girl I knew had a passion for art, she saw everything in a different way. To her everything can be transformed in to a notion of something beautiful by vibrant colors. Her father wanted her to pursue engineering just like him while her mother wanted her to become a Doctor. She really respected her parents and decided to do what they wanted, she enrolled herself in Pre-Medical and tried her level best. But she could not do it. To her it was all wrong. Her attempts failed and she scored poor in her examinations. Her years of hard work wasted and her life became filled with negative ideas about herself. She became isolated, she thought of herself as incompetent, miserable and a failure. She lost her passion for art and now she is about to be married of to one of her cousin.
They say we have freedom to everything but they decide the “global markers” these are the predictors of us. In layman terms, parents around the world paint rooms blue for a boy and pink for a girl. They buy Barbie dolls, doctor set, kitchen set for their daughters and automobiles, aeroplanes, technical video games for boys. What is this then? They say that oh! We are really good parents we will let our child decide what he/ she wants to be and secretly plant a bug in the mind of their child that a girl should be a doctor or a teacher while a boy should be an engineer. Sorry to disappoint you readers, arts and humanities are out of the question. Children are born with blank slates they copy and reproduce anything they see. From their first word, to their first slap. Everything is learned. And the amazing parents think that they are just helping the child by giving him a so called road map while he still has the freedom! Well they forget that their little ones are processing the confusion in their minds and this confusion becomes a malignancy in later life. They grow up with the notion that they should be what others expect them to be.
I mean, what is the reason to highlight the word ‘Freedom’ when there is no such thing. Our society wants to stand on a flat ground, for which they require a standard of similar behavior which they smartly names as the normalcy scale. Well people below or above the average are divergent. They think in a special way, they have a different perspective which can be achieved through different ways. The society can’t risk any change as it can lead to a certain level of disturbance in their norms so they simply preach that everyone has freedom and that everyone can control their lives however they trick us into this loophole so we don’t do what we are great at. People who are unable to adjust to such system, they revolt sometimes on individual levels and sometimes on a global level. This results in severe psychological problems ranging from depression, going up to levels of hopelessness, poor self-esteem, lack of trust and so on.
This controlling greatly influences individual growth. People become restricted, they are deprived of their true identities. To them they become slaves of time. Which is unfair. A child who loves the world and everything in it. Who sees beauty in even death of a little sparrow, beauty of life afterwards roaming in the meadows of heaven? He paints it with vibrant colors and then, his mother throws away his paints saying that you can’t waste your time on paintings do your homework. If this particular mother puts effort in his child’s dream then who knows he can be the next Picasso! But the bitter truth of our life is that majority of people are driven away from their true self just so that they can provide the required balance in the system by doing something more important (according to the society).
It saddens me often, to see the loss of potential individuals, who can provide amazing gifts to this society if they are allowed. Maybe this is the pattern of this world. Maybe we are subjected to this Pandora box of a life where we run around holding our heads tight in confusion, not knowing which door opens our true nature and which opens the nature that we are supposed to opt for.
But in the end, we should try to bring an end to this kind of hoax, let everyone decide for themselves or eradicate this word out of the dictionary and stop pretending that there is something called Freedom.
