The Coded Brain
Coding: An Essential Factor in Mental Development of Children
– Fatima Ahmed
In today’s day and age it has become an essential requirement to keep up with technology. Not only adults but even children these days have to keep up. For young minds who are into playing video games and are fascinated with technology may have wondered how all these cool video games and applications on smartphones work. For a better understanding, it is best that they learn coding. Yes, you heard it right.
Although coding and programming may seem very boring to anyone and everyone but the end result of developing video games and designing websites may make all the hard work worth it. In fact children who do not consider themselves tech savvy can also go ahead and learn coding. The MIT Media Lab has it sorted out for us, watch this cool TED talk here:
It is generally believed, although not proven, that young minds are more capable of adapting to new things. It is best to familiarize them to all the basics of it while they are still young and more adapting to new concepts. On the plus side it will expand their minds to absorb new technology more easily, not to mention sharpening of logical reasoning, analytical skills, problem solving, rational thinking and the likes.
One of the main reason that children should learn coding is that it is the most popular languages of the world. There is no field of occupation left that does not rely on technology and software programs. Come to think of it has now become a necessity for children to learn to code as in future there will be more technological advances, for which they will need to know the basics of coding or else what they have learned in school won’t really be useful much. So, for their safe and sound future it is best to introduce them to the domain of coding and programming.
Learning how to code and programming have a lot of advantages to it. For one, coding is a medium for designing, creating and expressing in terms of technology. For young minds in today’s era, it is the best way to express considering how they are living in a world that is filled with technological breakthroughs. Besides playing video games they can also design one of their own choice, just the way they like it. Not only that, they can also make their own websites too.
Regardless of what our children want to do in future and what their career choices might be, coding is an essential factor in brain development. It increases their problem solving skills. How? Well the answer is simple, before the children are even asked to participate in practical coding, they are first introduced to the core concepts and basics of how and why coding is done. Once their basic concepts are cleared then they are allowed into the practical world of coding. They learn computational thinking, which also means a process of thinking that is completely based on logic and reason. Computational thinking is also referred to as the skill to find mistake and errors and finding a solution to that particular problem.
Another advantage for children who are interested in coding is that they can also opt it as their future career choice and can specialize in this specific field. Coding is even taught as a separate, compulsory academic discipline in schools abroad. Whether you pursue coding as a career choice or not it is necessary to at least understand the basics of it. In this technologically advanced world, people who specialize in the field of coding and programming are high in demand and can earn a handsome amount of salary, given that they are good at it. Its not a waste of a career choice, to be precise.
