Scrabble for iPad is the traditional board game intended for the iPad. Scrabble itself is a crossword game where you make words with your given tiles developing on the letters already present on the board.
The game features five modes beginning with single player mode against the computer. The rest of the modes are about connecting with other players and using ‘pass n play’ if the same iPad.
There is yet another mode which is the most creative of the lot. The overall game uses the iPad as the scrabble board while iPhone and iPod Touches as the tile racks. All you need to do is download the free app Scrabble Tile Carrier on your iPhone/iPod Touching, and hook up wirelessly with the iPad, and you have a multi-player game with each player maintaining their rack to themselves.
All five game modes are amazing; the single player mode is excellent when there is no one else around, as the computer becomes a tough opponent. Moreover if you start another mode the single player game is saved.
Scrabble is a classic multiplayer game, and the iPad version excels in that aspect. As long as you have one iPad you can have maximum four people playing on it rather than requiring multiple iPads. The pass n play is when you have one iPad, and the players can avoid eying others racks as they pass the iPad.
Yet the best way to play this game is keep the iPad as the main board, and use iPhone and iPod Touchs as tile racks of individual players. This way everyone can keeps their tiles a secret. It is almost the same feeling when playing the board game in reality. You just slide your tiles from your rack to the board, and they appear on the iPad in the location you wish them to be.
Further pluses of Scrabble for iPad are that it’s better than the physical board game in the sense that you don’t have to deal with tiles going out of place or having to keep it laid out on the table if you want to play the game later. The interface is simpler as you can slide the tiles on the board right where you want them. Scrabble for iPad comes with a built in dictionary so you’re not disagreeing about words and also there is a live score tracker. More, you don’t have to worry about zooming in and out inconveniently; the board interface fits the screen perfectly. It’s like Scrabble and iPad are made for each other.
The only hitch with Scrabble is it’s price of $9.99. But when the physical board game costs around $15, the $10 iPad version appears much superior to the board game. You can take Scrabble with you wherever you carry your iPad, without the needless clutter of the physical thing and it consumes just 12 MB space. So when it comes to Scrabble even the bad had a good side to it.
